The Puducherry GNU/Linux Users Group hosts an open discussion mailing list on FreeLists. It is the same community space described on our PuduvaiGlug page: we bring together GNU/Linux and Free Software users in Pondicherry and beyond, and widen the conversation toward freedom-respecting technology in general.

How To’s — a step-by-step help manual
A mailing list is a shared email conversation: messages sent to one address are delivered to every subscriber. You use it to ask questions, share links and events, announce meetups, and learn from others without relying on a closed chat app or social network. Archives stay readable for years, which helps newcomers find past answers.
Our list focuses on GNU/Linux, Free and Open Source Software, and related topics (privacy, standards, hardware freedom, local community activities). It complements in-person meetups and other channels such as Signal.
- Open the official list page: FreeLists — Puducherry GNU/Linux Users Group.
- Find Subscriber actions (your email and a dropdown).
- Enter your email address in Your Email Address.
- Under What would you like to do?, choose Subscribe (use other options only if you already know you need them).
- Click Next ». FreeLists will send a confirmation email to that address.
- Open the email and follow the verification link (or instructions inside). Until you confirm, you are not subscribed.
- After confirmation, posts from puduvailug@freelists.org will reach your inbox. You can adjust delivery options later from FreeLists if needed.
If you do not see the message, check spam/junk and wait a few minutes. Use an address you check regularly so you do not miss threads.
- Subscribe first (see above). Only subscribers can post to most open lists on FreeLists.
- Compose a new email from the address you subscribed with.
- Put puduvailug@freelists.org in the To field (not Bcc if you want replies to stay on-list).
- Use a clear subject line (for example: “Intro”, “Question: Wi-Fi driver on …”, “Event: …”).
- Write your message. Plain text is preferred on many technical lists; avoid huge attachments—share links when files are large.
- Send. Your mail will go to all subscribers and typically appears in the list archive after processing.
Replying: Use “Reply” or “Reply all” carefully. On many lists, replying keeps conversation on the list so everyone benefits—follow what your mail client shows and prefer replying to the list address when you intend a public reply.
We want this list to stay welcoming, democratic, and useful. Please:
- Introduce yourself when you join—a short note about your interests helps people assist you.
- Stay respectful. Discrimination based on gender, caste, religion, economic status, or similar grounds is not acceptable.
- Stay roughly on topic (GNU/Linux, FOSS, privacy, related tools and community news). Occasional tangents happen; repeated off-topic or promotional spam is not okay.
- No harassment, threats, or personal attacks. Disagree with ideas, not people.
- Avoid posting secrets (passwords, private keys, confidential data). Use paste services or archives only when appropriate.
- Commercial posts: If you mention products or jobs, be transparent; excessive advertising belongs elsewhere unless the community agrees for a specific thread.
- Moderation: Repeated violations may lead to moderation actions consistent with FreeLists rules and our community norms.
These guidelines align with how PuduvaiGLUG has operated since 2011: growing from GNU/Linux users toward a broader freedom-respecting technology community while keeping space safe for everyone.
